Comprehensive BRCA1/BRCA2 examination (self-pay)

People with a stronger family history of breast or ovarian tumors who want complete sequencing of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes (more than 2000 mutations).

How to proceed

Clinical geneticist (optimal — the examination may be covered by public health insurance) or a commercial laboratory. 1. Consultation with a clinical geneticist (assessment of family history). 2. Blood draw. 3. Complete BRCA1/BRCA2 sequencing (3–6 months). 4. Consultation of the result with a geneticist — interpretation and recommendations for next steps.

What the test detects

Complete sequencing of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes — analyzes more than 2000 known mutations. Compared to the basic BRCA Screen (34 most common mutations), it also covers rare variants.

Where it's available

GHC Genetics (Prague 8), clinical genetics offices at university hospitals, GENNET.

Limits and caveats

Higher price. Longer time to result (3–6 months). It can reveal variants of uncertain clinical significance (VUS), whose interpretation requires expert consultation. We recommend having it done with a clinical geneticist.

A complete BRCA genetic examination is more appropriate after consulting a clinical geneticist, especially with a stronger family history (repeated breast/ovarian tumors in the family, tumors at a young age). The result may reveal variants of uncertain significance (VUS) that require expert interpretation. If the test is indicated by a clinical geneticist, it is usually covered by the health insurer.
