How to proceed

Clinical geneticist (optimal) or a commercial genetic laboratory. 1. Ideally a consultation with a clinical geneticist (assessment of family history). 2. Blood or saliva sample collection. 3. Laboratory DNA analysis (2–6 weeks). 4. Consultation of the result with a geneticist — interpretation and recommendations for next steps.

What the test detects

Hereditary mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, which significantly increase lifetime risk of breast cancer (up to 70%) and ovarian cancer (up to 40%). Also relevant for men (prostate, breast).

Where it's available

Clinical genetics offices (GHC Genetics, GENNET, AGEL Laboratories), specialized laboratories and hospitals (FN Motol, Masaryk Memorial Cancer Institute). Some DTC (direct-to-consumer) tests are available online.

Limits and caveats

Commercial DTC tests often test only the most common mutations and may miss rare variants. Always discuss the result with a clinical geneticist, who will assess overall risk including family history.

How to book

We recommend visiting a clinical genetics office first (your general practitioner or gynecologist can issue the referral). If you prefer a commercial test, book directly at the laboratory.

What to expect

A blood draw or saliva sample. The genetic analysis result usually takes 2–6 weeks.

What to bring

Your health insurance card, a referral from your doctor (if you have one). Information about your family history (who in the family had cancer and at what age).

Preparation

No special preparation.

Duration

The sample collection takes 5–10 minutes. Consultation with a geneticist takes 30–60 minutes.

Comfort

A routine blood draw or a simple saliva swab.
