How to proceed

EUC Laboratories or another laboratory offering the Septin 9 test. 1. Booking at the laboratory (no referral needed). 2. Blood draw (10 ml of EDTA plasma). 3. Laboratory analysis of SEPT9 gene methylation. 4. Result — a positive finding requires colonoscopy for confirmation.

What the test detects

Methylation of the Septin 9 gene (mSEPT9) in blood plasma — an epigenetic biomarker associated with colorectal cancer. An FDA-approved test (Epi proColon) that detects abnormal methylation in the promoter region of the SEPT9 gene.

Where it's available

EUC Laboratories (Prague and other cities). Availability in the Czech Republic is gradually expanding.

Limits and caveats

A non-invasive blood test — it does not replace colonoscopy, which can both detect and remove pre-cancerous polyps. Sensitivity is approximately 68–73% for carcinoma and lower for adenomas. A negative result does not rule out disease. A positive result requires confirmation by colonoscopy.

A supplementary self-pay blood test. It does not replace the fecal occult blood test (FOBT) or screening colonoscopy. If you are eligible for the colorectal cancer screening program, take part in it. A positive result does not mean a diagnosis of cancer. A negative result does not rule out disease.
