What the test detects

DNA methylation changes in blood associated with colorectal cancer. It is a supplementary blood test that looks for epigenetic signals suggesting the presence of a colon or rectal tumor.

Where it's available

GHC Genetics (Prague 8). Availability in the Czech Republic is still limited.

Limits and caveats

A non-invasive blood test — it does not replace colonoscopy, which can both detect and remove pre-cancerous polyps. Methylation tests have lower sensitivity than standard screening methods (FOBT + colonoscopy). A negative result does not rule out disease. A positive result requires confirmation by colonoscopy.

Colorectal cancer screening (FOBT/FIT or screening colonoscopy)

A supplementary self-pay blood test. It does not replace the fecal occult blood test (FOBT) or screening colonoscopy. If you are eligible for the colorectal cancer screening program, take part in it. A positive result does not mean a diagnosis of cancer. A negative result does not rule out disease. In case of symptoms (blood in stool, changes in bowel habits, unexplained weight loss), see a doctor regardless of the result of this test.
